French Antiques

In the world of French antiques there are many different categories. There are Furniture, Wall Lights, Mantels, Clocks, Porcelain, Paintings, and instruments, Tapestries, Chandeliers, Accessories and Sculptures. Some of the most beautiful pieces come from the 1800’s.

Some of the most famous French artists are Theodore Le Monnier and Charles Edouard Edmond Delort. Paintings from these great artists go for thousands of dollars in some places. 

Paintings were done in oil and they have great color schemes and clarity. If you have never seen paintings from that time period you should try to because they are really something to see.
Some of the best French antiques come from the 19th century.

The most common that is sold in auction houses or antique dealers are pieces from French 19th Century Louis XV and Louis XVI. These tables back then were made with great color ad detail. They have a very distinctive look unlike modern pieces today. These tables were made with Pietra Dura which is Inlaid Marble and Gilt Bronze with Mounted Mahogany and Satine.


Some of the best furniture was made back then with Marble, the strongest Tulipwood, Mahogany and Walnut and Gilt Bronze. Sculptures were an important piece of artwork in the late 1800’s and easily 1900’s. These sculptures were made from Iron, Ivory, Bronze, Marble and Terra Cotta. Some popular pieces included the Cast Iron figure of “Lady Victory”. In Ivory there is the 19th Century French carved Ivory Crucifix.


Bronze was a popular alloy in sculptures. Some popular pieces are the 19th century Patinated Bronze Sculpture of a standing Maiden Holding a Six Light Gilt Bronze and the Bronze piece by Arthur Jacques Le Duc which is a sculpture called “ Nesses and Deianeria.


Marble was very popular as well, A piece called the Venus and Cupid by Felix Maurice Charpentier is a beautiful piece that stands on a pedestal. Another great piece that dates back to the 18th and 19th Century is a White Marble Group of Cherub and a Putti looking over the clouds. French antiques no matter what style you choose to purchase has a great period look to them and they give you a feel of being back in that time.
